Using square tiles, Mrs. Umpleby’s 3rd-grade students designed and built animal cages with the correct area to make sure their “animals” didn’t escape. Through this hands-on activity, they learned that area is the space inside a shape and that we can find it by multiplying the length × width.
After building their own enclosure, students walked around the room measuring their classmates’ cages, checking the length and width to calculate each area. So much collaboration, movement, and real-world math thinking happening all at once!

Mrs. Morris’ Kindergarten class had fun with Mrs. Williams on their Media Center visit. They loved learning about planting and growing vegetables. Mrs. Williams demonstrated how to draw a picture of the process. Media Center visitation was the highlight of their day. Thank you Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Souders.

Ms. Herman's Pre-K researchers have been hard at work celebrating Black History Month! Together with their parents, they chose an influential African American contributor and created a poster presentation to share with the class and parents!

Students in Ms. Swopes’ second grade put their knowledge of Black History figures to the test with a high-energy game of BOOM!
After learning about a different historical figure each day, students listened carefully as a description was read aloud. They had to stay focused… and when Ms. Swopes said the magic word “BOOM!” they raced to grab the correct name card! The fastest correct answer moved on to the next round.
From leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. to trailblazers like Rosa Parks, these students showed they were truly listening, learning, and making connections.

During shared reading, Mrs. Niewoonder's class read the story Among the Stars by Roda Ahmed. They learned about Mae Jemison, the first African American woman in space. The class also read a nonfiction passage about Jemison and learned more about her life. Finally, students made a rocket ship and used straws to make their rockets blast off!

🚨 Heads up! 🚨 Fifth-grade students practiced classifying vertebrates by playing a lively game of Heads Up! From mammals and reptiles to birds, amphibians, and fish, students used clues, critical thinking, and teamwork to guess each animal. Learning + laughter made for an unforgettable day of science fun! 🦜🐍🐠🐸🐿️

Dewar fifth graders took a totally rad trip to the past while reviewing skills from their fractions unit! 📚➗✨ Students time-traveled back to the 90s 🕶️📼(when their math teachers were fifth graders) and tackled throwback challenges designed to test and strengthen their fraction knowledge! 🚀🧠🎶 Math is all that and a bag of chips! 🧠➕

Big thanks to our Social Committee for sponsoring "Share the LOVE!" ❤️
What a lovely way to celebrate our staff — the hearts-by-grade idea and the color-code dots made it so easy (and fun) to share appreciation.
Social Committee — you made our days brighter and our Dewar team stronger. Thank you for spreading the love! 💜✨

Mrs. Morris and Mrs. Trina’s Kindergarten class celebrated a fun-filled Valentine’s Day with slime making and partying. “Best day ever”, they said.

Ms. Swopes' 2nd graders put their math skills to the test in a FUN and engaging way thanks to Ms. Swopes’ Colquitt EMC Bright Ideas activity! To prepare for our math test covering addition, subtraction, and word problems, our second graders became detectives for the day during a Math Mystery Puzzle Challenge! Students worked in teams, and each detective received their own detective booklet and one group record sheet. Before earning a stamp and secret code from Ms. Swopes, every student had to solve each problem independently — teamwork AND accountability! After visiting every station, students used their collected clues to crack the final code and unlock the TREASURE BOX! Way to go, Math Detectives — we are so proud of your hard work and problem-solving skills!

Today, our 5th-grade girls had the pleasure of hearing from Ms. Stephanie Bullard, owner of Etiquette and Grace Academy. The girls enjoyed a light breakfast snack while learning proper table etiquette. Of course, we had to provide them with fancy tableware to complete the experience! Thank you, Ms. Bullard, for sharing your skills and your passion with our young ladies! #WomentoWarriors
