Student Council Leadership Conference

Click on image to view video

On Saturday, April 29, 2017, the Dewar Elementary Student Council hosted their First Annual Leadership Conference. The conference featured an opening session, breakout sessions, an escape room, and a closing session to 46 students and 7 adults from Lowndes County Schools, Scintilla Charter Academy, and Valdosta City Schools. The students had opportunities to build leadership, inclusivity, and team building skills during the breakout sessions and they used these skills to work together to escape the Great Leadership Escape room.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped to make the conference a success. Without our parents, volunteers, and community partners, we would not have been able to provide such a successful experience to the student leaders. As quoted by Margaret Mead, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

This year’s theme was based on a famous quote from Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” The students were encouraged throughout the day to focus on their leadership abilities and realize the power they have to make a difference in the world.

Ms Current is Awarded Grant!!

On Monday, September 25, third grade teacher Sarah Current was awarded the Bright Ideas Education Grant from Colquitt EMC.  Ms Current was given a check for $1000 that will be used in her classroom for flexible seating.  The purpose of the Bright Ideas Education Grant is to provide funding for teachers to put their creative plans in action.  Funding for the grants is made possible through Georgia legislation that allows unclaimed capital credits to be used for education in the communities served by EMC’s.  Colquitt EMC is a member-owned cooperative that provides electricity to over 43,900 members with 66,000 meters in Berrien, Brooks, Colquitt, Cook, Lowndes, Tift and Worth counties.

Several of our teachers at Dewar Elementary will be using "flexible seating" in their classrooms this year.  Since this looks a little different from traditional rows and clusters of desks, we wanted to share a YouTube video that might explain some of the reasons behind the seating changes.  If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
